This virtual educational activity is jointly provided by AXIS Medical Education and the Connecticut Hospital Association in collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services

Target audience:  Physicians, nurses, social workers, quality professionals, risk managers, healthcare executives, and all healthcare professionals working with women and families affected by trauma and addiction.

Description: The purpose of this educational activity is to provide information and tips on effective communication to utilize with families with members with Substance Use Disorders (SUD).  Participants will learn about barriers to families seeking support, barriers to families visiting the NICU, and how to encourage family participation for successful discharges.  The program will also briefly explore cultural differences and personal biases to be aware of when working with families with members with SUD.  Lastly, participants will receive a list of resources across CT they can utilize with their families.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

• Explain effective communication methods for working with families with members with Substance Use Disorder (SUD).
• Describe barriers to families seeking support and how to address these barriers.
• Identify positive strategies for engaging families with members with SUD, through a clinical social work lens.

Robin Naglieri, LCSW, Clinical Social Worker, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Connecticut Children’s, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Connecticut Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).  Ms. Naglieri received a MSW from UConn’s School of Social Work, with a concentration in group work.  Her relevant work experience includes inpatient and outpatient dual diagnosis programs, an outpatient mental health clinic, and a Family Resource Center and Birth to Three program.  Ms. Naglieri also has experience in the Connecticut public school systems, working with youths with problem sexual behavior and in a Multiple Sclerosis Center.  The majority of her training and specialties are in working with adults with dual diagnoses, utilizing various evidenced-based practices to help them achieve their goals.  Her role in the NICU at Connecticut Children’s includes working with families with babies with Neonatal Absence Syndrome, in addition to providing support and resources to all NICU parents.  Ms. Naglieri’s favorite part of her role in the NICU is connecting with families and hearing their stories.

Social Workers

ACHE Qualified Education credit must be related to healthcare management (i.e., it cannot be clinical, inspirational, or specific to the sponsoring organization).
